INTRODUCTION : The several Linux distros that I am most interested in using on my computers (Ubuntu, LinuxMint, Debian) have release identifiers (names, numbers, and/or dates) that are hard to keep straight unless you deal with them daily. The 3 tables below are meant to help keep track of the names, numbers, and dates. Another handy resource is the Wikipedia page for each of the distros : This page gives me a place to add notes of interest to me --- for example, notes describing the rather confusing way Debian 'unstable' and 'testing' code transitions into 'stable' releases. Release Schedules Around the year 2011: Ubuntu and Linux Mint made distro releases (for personal computers) every 6 months. For Ubuntu and Linux Mint 'personal computer' releases, LTS (= Long Term Support) for a release meant 3 years (36 months) of software updates support --- rather than a year and a half (18 months) of updates support for most (about 3 out of 4) of their releases. Ubuntu server releases were supported for about 5 or 6 years. Debian releases were coming out every 2 to 3 years, in the 2002 to 2011 time frame. Debian is used at many server sites. You can check the Wikipedia pages of these distros (links above) --- and by those Wikipedia pages, access the web sites for those distros -- for more recent info on their release schedules. |
