INTRODUCTION: On an Ubuntu Install Notes web page (subdude-site.com link), I described my journey (circa 2009) from using the MS Windows operating system to using Linux --- and I described how I came to choose Ubuntu Linux (Wikipedia link) when I migrated my main computers from MS-Windows to Linux. I used Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) (Wikipedia link) for almost a decade (from 2009 to about 2019), on a few desktop computers and some Acer netbook computers. When I finally upgraded to a newer Linux distro, I migrated my data to a new desktop computer on which I installed the Ubuntu MATE distro (version 18.04 LTS). (LTS = Long Term Support) I liked the Gnome2 'Nautilus' desktop and file-management environment in Ubuntu 9.10. When Gnome went to a different desktop system (Gnome3), the Gnome2 environment was so popular that some Argentine users used Gnome2 software to develop the MATE (Wikipedia link) desktop environment, including a file-management system called 'Caja' (based on 'Nautilus'). I have been quite happy using Ubuntu MATE 18.04 from 2019 through 2023, so I was quite pleased to see that a 'Tommy Thompson' YouTube channel is dedicated to making videos about utilities and applications in a Ubuntu MATE distro (various versions: 18.04, 22.04, etc.). I think that the Tommy Thompson videos (link to his YouTube channel) may be useful to me as I need to use various types of applications and as I need to perform various system functions --- such as upgrading from Ubuntu MATE 18.04 LTS to a newer LTS version (he describes updating at least one version of Ubuntu-MATE). In the past, I have found it necessary to search for suitable web browsers when an old version of a web browser is no longer working on important sites that are using newer web technologies. So I was pleased to see that Tommy Thompson has videos on more than 20 web browsers that can run on Ubuntu MATE. To make it easy to find the videos that may be useful to me, I decided to make this web page that puts the YouTube-video-links in various categories on this web page (and make the page available to other Linux and Ubuntu-MATE users who might find these videos helpful). You can use the category links at the top of this page to go to the various categories of videos --- or use a text search in your web browser to find utilities/apps/topics of interest --- or simply scroll down this page to find videos of interest. My thanks to Tommy Thompson for dedicating tremendous effort to make so many (200-plus) useful videos, since around 2017. Tommy Thompson has a web site at LearnUbuntuMate.weebly.com. There may be some information (in text in web pages) there that is not in these videos. Tommy Thompson has a video titled My Pfizer Covid vaccine story that may be of interest. |

TextEditor videos: It is rather surprising that among the 200-plus Tommy Thompson YouTube videos, he does not seem to have one devoted to one or more text editors. He may have a video in which he used a text editor to edit a text file like a configuration file. If I ever see that in one of his videos, I may document here which editor he used. In the meantime, note that the Ubuntu-MATE distro provides the MATE 'Pluma' text editor. The GNOME 'gedit' text editor can be installed also. Or the newer GNOME Text Editor can be installed. I prefer using the more powerful 'scite' text editor for script and web development --- and configuration file editing. SciTE provides a built-in HTML Help page (link to a copy) that describes scite's features and usage. I find it very handy that 'scite' can handle 'block' (multi-line, within-lines, rectangular) editing (highlighting, indenting, inserting, deleting, changing) --- whereas many editors (like the ones above) only support 'current line highlighting'.
